Fibria in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index
Fibria is one of the seven Brazilian companies selected for the 2009/2010 edition of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), which recognizes the world’s best companies in terms of corporate sustainability. This index was created in 1999 and monitors the economic, environmental and social performance of 2,500 companies whose shares are traded at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), selecting the ones with the best practices in the triple bottom line. The DJSI World annual review takes into consideration aspects such as corporate governance, risk management and climate change, among others.
Quarterly earnings results
On November 13th, Fibria disclosed its results for the 3rd quarter. The company announced a record production of 1.4 million tons of pulp – 7% higher than that of the previous quarter and 30% up on the figure for the same period of 2008 – and a net income of R$ 181 million.
Debt management
Following the company’s strategy for managing its indebtedness, the sum of US$ 1 billion was raised through a 10 year bond issuance. The first step in the process of optimizing the company’s capital structure and harmonizing the debt amortization schedule was the sale of the Guaíba Unit, which was announced in October. A further US$ 1.2 billion is to be raised under the debt management program, still in 2009, by means of export prepayments facilities. For further information, access this link.
Sustainability Index
Fibria is one of the 34 companies listed in the Bovespa Corporate Sustainability Index (ISE) of the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange. This index brings together companies which demonstrate a high level of commitment to best practices in sustainability and corporate governance. This 6th edition of the ISE portfolio will be valid until November 30, 2010. This recognition reinforces Fibria's commitment to creating economic value with socioenvironmental responsibility.

Preventive maintenance
The Três Lagoas Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul State) effected a programmed pulp production partial shutdown, between November 10th and 12th, in order to make adjustments and carry out maintenance. This preventive action is part of Fibria’s operational excellence policy. Led by the company’s technical team, a total of 600 professionals conducted the downtime work, and production was resumed, as scheduled, on the 12th. All the planned activities were completed without incident.
Forest Savings
On October 27th and 28th, a group of employees representing all Fibria’s units visited the plantations of small-scale producers in Rio Grande do Sul State who participate in the company’s Forest Savings Program, with the aim of demonstrating the development and the results of the program in the region. The project is a partnership between the company and local farmers, whereby Fibria guarantees to buy the wood that is produced. The state has 56,000 hectares of eucalyptus plantations, of which 15,000 hectares are fostered. The Rio Grande do Sul partnership experience is soon to be implemented in Jacareí (São Paulo State).
Community entrepreneurs
On November 9th, Fibria began the professional training of 320 fishermen and gatherers of shellfish in the community of Caravelas (Bahia State), who are participating in the project “Fishing with Fibria”. The project aims to structure the local fishing prodution chain, in partnership with APESCA (Caravelas Fisherman’s Association) and the Z-25 Fishing Community. This initiative is conducted under the “Enterprising with Fibria” Program, which was first launched in the south of Bahia and is supported by local government and NGOs.
Culture with Fibria
Another project being conducted in the same region, in the district of Helvécia, in Nova Viçosa (Bahia State), is “Culture with Fibria”, which works on training in the artistic and cultural medium within this “quilombola” community (descendents of runaway slaves), with the aim of creating a network of cultural undertakings within the region. The first result of this endeavor was a theatrical production, entitled “Auto de São Benedito” and directed by Ciro Barcelos. Courses will be conducted in Helvécia, between November 23rd and 27th, under the methodology “Entrepreneurial Terrain”, developed by the consulting firm NGE.
