A new leader is born in the renewable forest business

Fibria, the result of the merger between Aracruz Celulose and Votorantim Celulose e Papel (VCP), the creation of which was announced on September 1st, starts life in a high-profile position in the renewable forest business. A leader in eucalyptus pulp production, it is the largest global supplier of this renewable and recyclable raw material for the manufacture of different grades of paper that contribute to the well-being of people all around the world.

Care for the environment

All of the pulp supplied by Fibria comes exclusively from 716,000 hectares of renewable eucalyptus plantations in the midwest, southeast and south of Brazil. Fibria forestry plantations are certified by globally recognized systems: Cerflor and the FSC. Wood from native forests is not used in industrial processes nor for any other purposes, but is preserved in reserves covering a total of 461,000 hectares. Interspersed with the plantations in ‘mosaics’, these native reserves account for 36% of the company’s forestry base and play an important role in the preservation of biological diversity and the balancing of the ecosystem.

A Brazilian pulp and paper company

Fibria operates seven mills, three of them — Jacareí (São Paulo state), Aracruz (Espírito Santo state) and Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul state) — producing just pulp, one integrated pulp and paper mill in Guaíba (Rio Grande do Sul state), and one paper mill in Piracicaba (São Paulo state). The company also holds 50% stakes in Veracel (Bahia state) and Conpacel - Consórcio Paulista de Papel e Celulose (São Paulo state). Together these units have a production capacity of some 5,8 million tons of market pulp (for paper makers) per year and 415,000 tons of thermal, carbonless, printing and writing papers. Fibria also owns the largest printing product distributor in Brazil, KSR Distribuidora, with 19 branches around Brazil and about 15,000 clients.

Logistical efficiency

The company uses road, rail and waterway systems to transport wood from the planted forests to its mills. Pulp and paper is also shipped by these means to port terminals at: Portocel (Espírito Santo state), Santos (São Paulo state) and Rio Grande (Rio Grande do Sul state). Almost all of the pulp produced by the company is exported, mainly to Europe, North America and Asia, with the support of six commercial offices, vendors and international distribution centers in strategic locations.

Local development and social responsibility

Besides having 15,000 employees, including own and permanently outsourced professionals, Fibria runs environmental education and conservation programs, as well as professional training and income generation projects in the local communities near its units and operations. The company also runs a forestry partnership program that promotes income and land use diversification for farmers and accounts for thousands of jobs in the countryside, sharing wealth and boosting local development.
