Fibria on the TFD Steering Committee

The Forests Dialogue (TFD), an international organization that promotes dialogue on forestry issues, chose new joint leaders for its Steering Committee on April 15th. The newly elected members, who will assume their functions in October, are Carlos Alberto Roxo, general manager of Sustainability and Corporate Relations at Fibria, and James Mayers, head of the Natural Resources Group at the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Members of the TFD, in which Fibria has participated since 2005, include representatives of major forestry companies, NGOs, inter-government institutions, trade unions and universities. Highlight on accountability

In the 12th edition of the Investor Relations Global Rankings, Fibria stood out for its care in accountability. The company took fourth place in the worldwide ranking for the sector and third place overall in Latin America, within the category Financial Disclosure and Communication. Created in 1999, this award honors companies that are set benchmarks in their communication with investors. There were 503 companies, from 35 different countries, competing in this year’s edition.

Fibria launches new thermal paper

In April, Fibria launched Termoscript KPR, a new product in its specialty papers' line. Developed at the Piracicaba Unit (São Paulo State), Termoscript KPR contains fibers that react to UV light and retains the recorded information for up to seven years – longer than any of the papers currently available in Brazil. This new product is the result of a R$ 115 million investment in new technologies, including a licensing agreement with Oji Paper, one of the world’s leading producers of thermal papers.

Certified Brazil

Between April 7th and 9th, Fibria participated in the IV Brasil Certificado, a trade fair and business forum focusing on products and services relating to forest certification. The company, which also helped to support the event, held in the city of São Paulo, was represented by José Luciano Penido, chairman of the Board of Directors, who participated in the debate on the planted forest sector.

Among the world’s biggest

Fibria is the only Brazilian company in the pulp & paper sector to be included in the Ranking 2010 of the 2,000 biggest companies in the world, published by Forbes magazine. In determining the ranking, this business publication considers the criteria of revenue, profit, asset value and market value. This year’s list contains 33 Brazilian companies, and shows Fibria in 980th place.

Odor Perception Network

At the end of March, the tenth meeting was held at the Três Lagoas Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul State) for Ecological Agents of the Odor Perception Network (OPN). At this event, the OPN methodology was presented, along with the timetable of activities for 2010 and the first half of 2011. Also present were representatives of the State Environmental Police and the Fire Brigade.

Sustainable agribusiness under debate

Fibria was represented at the seminar "Paths to sustainable agribusiness: current Brazilian scenario and developing innovative proposals", organized by the Brazilian Fund for Biodiversity (Funbio) and the Arapyaú Institute. At this event, which was held in Brasília (Federal District) on April 13th, João Carlos Augusti, Fibria's Forest Environment manager, participated in the dialogue on planted forests. The event also saw the launching of the study "Focus – a vision of a sustainable Brazil", presenting the most important results in relation to the soybean, sugar cane, livestock farming and planted forest sectors.

Environmental education in the schools

In March, Fibria’s Aracruz Unit (Espírito Santo State) entered its second year of activities under the banner of the Environmental Education Project, carried out in municipal schools. This year, in addition to Barra do Riacho and Vila do Riacho, in the municipality of Aracruz, the project has been extended to include other communities in the states of Espírito Santo, Bahia and Minas Gerais. This initiative involves the training of teachers and performing activities with students aimed at raising environmental awareness and proposes taking a proactive stance in seeking solutions to environmental problems within the community.

Silviculture workshop

A total of 29 professionals from the technology, operations and forest development areas at Fibria’s units participated in the Second Silviculture Workshop, which ran from April 5th to 8th. This event, held at the Capão Bonito Forest Unit (São Paulo State), is part of the company’s Synergy Project, through which meetings are arranged between representatives from all Fibria’s units to exchange information on the best silviculture practices. The next gathering will be at Aracruz (Espírito Santo State), between May 5th and 8th.

A sad announcement

It is with great sadness that Fibria announces the death of its employee Romário Silvestre Koch, aged 28, in São Paulo on April 12th. Our electrical maintenance technician had been undergoing treatment at the state capital’s Red Cross Hospital since the previous Friday (April 9th), after suffering burns in an accident while carrying out maintenance work at the company’s Três Lagoas Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul). The funeral took place on April 14th, in the district of Posto da Mata, within the municipality of Nova Viçosa (Bahia).

Did you know...

...that Brazilian pulp production in 2009 was up by 6% in relation to that of the previous year? At the same time, pulp exports increased by 16.9%.
