Fibria announces sale of Conpacel and KSR to Suzano

Fibria struck an asset sale deal of its subsidiary company, Consórcio Paulista de Papel e Celulose (Conpacel), and paper distributor KSR with Suzano Papel and Celulose. The notification was communicated through a Material Fact released to the market on December 21. The deal provides that Suzano will pay R$1.45 billion for the acquisition of 50% of Conpacel’s assets from Fibria, which includes the mill with a 650 thousand tons of pulp capacity a year, 390 thousand tons of paper and Conpacel’s forestry area. The deal also envisages payment of R$50 million for the acquisition of KSR. Completion of the deal for sale of Conpacel’s assets will occur by January 31st, 2011 and the sale of KSR’s assets by February 28. The deal is subject to approval by Brazilian authorities.

Fibria’s forests sequester 25 million tons of carbon a year

Fibria’s 2010 Carbon Footprint report – base year 2009 – has been completed and shows a balance of 25 million tons of carbon sequestered – 8 times the emissions of all the company’s forestry, industrial and logistics operations combined. On December 7, the company received the final inventory of greenhouse gas emissions audited by BR-TÜV certification, which provides a guarantee that Fibria’s document is in line with ISO 14064 and GHG Protocol international standards.

Fibria supports the International Year of Forests

Fibria is the first Brazilian company in the forestry sector to use the International Year of the Forests logo, a United Nations (UN) initiative. The aim is to contribute to raise awareness of the importance of the conservation of the forests, which are the essence of Fibria’s business.

 

Fibria joins Business Sustainability Index of the Brazilian Stock Exchange

For the second consecutive year, Fibria was selected to join the Business Sustainability Index (ISE) of BM&FBOVESPA – São Paulo Stock Exchange. In its sixth review, the 2011 ISE portfolio comprises 38 listed Brazilian companies, which shows their commitment to good sustainability and corporate governance practices.

Fibria listed on BM&FBOVESPA’s Carbon Efficient Index

Fibria is the only Brazilian forestry company to join the Carbon Efficient Index (ICO2) launched on December 2, 2010 by BM&FBOVESPA and the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES). The first edition of the ICO2 is comprised of 42 companies listed on the IBr-X 50 index containing the 50 most traded shares on the São Paulo Stock Exchange. The goal of the ICO2 is to foster the commitment of companies to environmental management practices aimed at climate changes and preparing the market for a low carbon economy.

Forest Stewardship Council certifies Fibria’s new forest areas

In November 2010, an audit was completed to expand Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification of the areas under forestry partnership agreement at Fibria’s Três Lagoas Unit located in Mato Grosso do Sul State. Formerly, the Unit was certified for 203,659 hectares of its forests and, with the expansion, another 17,500 hectares were added. Today, 19 local farms are Fibria’s partners. FSC certification ensures that the wood is handled in a socially just, economically viable and environmentally sound manner.

Carlos Aguiar elected leader of the Brazilian pulp and paper industry

Fibria’s CEO, Carlos Aguiar, was recognized as Leader of the Brazilian Pulp and Paper Industry at the 33rd Business Leaders Forum held in São Paulo, Brazil, on November 29, 2010. The Forum gathers together industry executives to discuss strategies on key issues on the Brazilian agenda and to disseminate sustainable competitiveness among companies. A total of 119 industry leaders and 65 state leaders without prior application were elected by 18,000 voters, including businesspeople and executives from all over Brazil.

Fibria trains staff to monitor its forests in northeastern Brazil

On December 7, Fibria’s Forest Monitors Program certified its first group of monitors. The program trains residents from local communities to act as monitors and operate in the company's eucalyptus forests. The certification took place at Conceição da Barra, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. The 33 certified monitors will help conserve the forest’s flora and fauna and control fires, pests and diseases. Two other groups began training in the program in the state of Bahia at Posto da Mata (municipality of Nova Viçosa) and Caravelas totaling 60 participants.

Fibria supports supplier qualification program in Mato Grosso do Sul State

On December 9, 2010 the Mato Grosso do Sul State Federation of Industries (FIEMS) launched the Supplier Qualification Program (PQF). As of January 2011, 30 local suppliers will be trained to implement management tools that meet Brazilian certification standards. Training will be provided by the Euvaldo Lodi Institute (IEL) from the municipality of Três Lagoas and is sponsored by the Brazilian Services for Support of Small and Micro Businesses (SEBRAE-MS) and the program’s anchor companies, including Fibria. The main goal of the PQF is to strengthen the supply chain of major companies based at Três Lagoas.

Did you know...

...that Fibria was a highlight in the survey Management Practices of Brazilian Businesses conducted by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV)? For two years FGV interviewed Brazilian executives from 163 companies to assess 10 management practices. Fibria received an overall average of 4.60 on a 1 to 5 scale, above the industry’s average (2.98), the Brazilian average (2.82), and the average of management benchmark countries like the United States (3.32), Germany (3.26) and Japan (3.19). The survey was based on methodology developed by the Centre for Economic Performance (London School of Economics and Political Science), McKinsey & Company, and Stanford University.
