Recognition from investors

Fibria’s Investor Relations area was recognized among the top five in Brazil in 2009, in the category “Best Socioenvironmental Sustainability”, during the IR Magazine Awards Brazil 2010, held on July 15th. The Brazilian Economics Institute (IBRE) and the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) performed a survey based on interviews with 400 stock market professionals working in Brazil. The best professionals and companies were chosen in 16 categories. This is the sixth edition of this initiative, promoted by IR Magazine, an international publication dealing with investor relations, in partnership with its Brazilian equivalent, the magazine Revista RI, and the Brazilian Investor Relations Institute (IBRI).

Forestry partnership

Today, July 29th, Fibria launched its forestry partnership program in the regions of the Paraíba Valley and Bragantina, in São Paulo State. The Poupança Florestal (Forestry Savings) program stimulates the planting of eucalyptus on properties in the vicinity of Fibria’s Forest Units and opens up the possibility of a sustainable business for farmers. Poupança Florestal provides incentives for planting right from the start, including eucalyptus seedlings, technical assistance, a guaranteed market for the wood and encouragement for environmental preservation. This is a win-win situation for both the company and the community, with the households having a new alternative for income generation and Fibria ensuring an alternative source of wood for its pulp production.

Cerflor in Piracicaba

In July, Fibria’s Piracicaba Unit (São Paulo State) received chain of custody certification under the Brazilian Forest Certification Program (CERFLOR). The chain of custody provides the tracking of the entire production process, from the source of the wood, through its transformation into pulp, to the manufacturing of paper. The certification, which is valid for five years, assures for the customers that the Unit’s papers are produced with raw material from sustainably managed forests. CERFLOR is recognized by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).

Environmental management trail blazing

Fibria has allied its entire value chain to its commitment towards sustainable development and has become the world’s first forest sector company to join the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Supply Chain. On July 16th, the company met with 76 of its leading suppliers, in the city of São Paulo, to share with them its vision and actions taken regarding sustainability and to discuss the best practices for the management of greenhouse gases. The CDP is an international organization that monitors the climate governance of publicly listed companies and invites them, every year, to voluntarily provide information about their climate change management.

Meeting with rural producers

In July, Fibria’s Aracruz Unit (Espírito Santo State) organized environmental education gatherings with members of the Integrated Wood and Food Production (PIMA) program. On July 1st, around 40 PIMA beneficiaries from the municipalities of Aracruz and Serra (Espírito Santo State) participated in discussions highlighting the environmental benefits of the activities carried out under the program and determining measures to reduce the impact on the environment and improve the quality of life in the community. The farmers participating in PIMA grow foods such as beans, corn and cassava amongst Fibria’s eucalyptus plantations. On July 13th, the company met with rural producers from the community of São Geraldo, in São Mateus (Espírito Santo State).

Restructuring in beekeeping

On July 7th, professionals from Fibria’s Capão do Leão Forest Unit (Rio Grande do Sul State) and CENAG (Agribusiness Center Foundation) got together at the company’s Environmental Education Center (NEA) to present the new procedures under the Program for the Structuring and Management of the Apiculture Production Chain. The event was also attended by beekeepers from the south of the country and technical staff from the Rio Grande do Sul Association for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Undertakings (EMATER), who discussed the procedures for environmental preservation in Fibria’s forest areas where the beekeepers are producing honey. There are presently 23 projects under way and the combined yield from the 2008-2009 crop came to approximately 30 tons of honey. Another 40 projects have been registered and are awaiting approval.

Sustainability seminar

Good practices relating to the management of water resources, changes in the climate and in the energy matrix, waste and sustainability were the topics on the agenda at the 3rd Sustainable Production and Consumption Seminar, organized by the Minas Gerais State Federation of Industries (FIEMG) and held on July 8th and 9th. Umberto Cinque, Industrial Environment general manager at Fibria, talked about carbon management and the carbon inventory before an audience of about 350 people.

Environmental cinema

In order to combine entertainment with building awareness about environmental preservation among students, Fibria’s Três Lagoas Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul State) held the Cine NEA event on July 7th, 9th and 14th. Organized by the company’s Environmental Education Center (NEA), this event involved educational cinema sessions for around 700 students from the municipal and state elementary and secondary school system in Três Lagoas.

Technical training

On June 29th and 30th, Fibria gathered 90 people together at the SENAI auditorium in Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul State) to present the new phase of its Program of Human Resource Technical Training and Development. In 2007 and 2008, this initiative provided technical training in pulp, paper, chemicals, electronics, instrumentation and mechanics for approximately 280 professionals, in order to meet the demand of its new industrial unit, which came into operation in 2009. As from August 2010, Fibria will be holding new technical training and development courses, in partnership with SENAI (Brazil’s National Industrial Training Service), so that the professionals chosen for this training can participate in future company recruitment drives.

Safe Forests

On July 1st, Fibria’s Três Lagoas Forest Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul State) launched the Safe Forest Program in an event attended by some 70 professionals, as well as representatives of the company’s contractors, who made the commitment to disseminate among their teams the safety requirements set out in the manual for carrying out forestry activities. Their compliance will be monitored by internal auditors. The forest units in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Espírito Santo will be the next to join the program.

Did you know...

...that Fibria’s forest base covers an area of 1.04 million hectares, spread over six different Brazilian states? Of this total, 393,000 hectares are areas for the preservation of the native vegetation and 585,000 hectares are renewable eucalyptus plantations. On top of this, the company fosters rural producers on a further 115,000 hectares of land.
