Executive board change

Marcos Grodetzky, Fibria’s Treasury and Investor Relations officer, will be leaving the company by the end of March. As of April, our CEO, Carlos Aguiar, will temporarily assume responsibility for the Treasury and Investor Relations areas. Marcos fulfilled the professional task he set himself with merit and is now taking up fresh challenges. Fibria expects to be able to announce shortly the appointment of a new executive officer for this area.

Booming productivity at Três Lagoas

On March 2nd, Fibria’s Três Lagoas Unit (Mato Grosso do Sul State) reached the important milestone of 1 million tons of pulp produced after just 337 days in operation. This result sets a new benchmark, as we are the first pulp producer to achieve this production level in less than a year. The mill came into operation on March 30, 2009, with an annual production capacity of 1.3 million tons of pulp.

Investment in the social area

In 2009, Fibria’s Aracruz Unit (Espírito Santo State) invested more than R$ 5 million in socio-environmental projects and activities in communities in the vicinity of its mills and planted forests in the north of Espírito Santo and the south of Bahia State. These investments were the result of our process of community engagement that enabled us to develop ties while at the same time improving the quality of life of the local population.

FSC Audit

In March, three of Fibria’s forest areas were submitted to an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) recertification audit. Our management of the eucalyptus plantations in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul (Três Lagoas Forest Unit) and São Paulo (Capão Bonito and Vale do Paraíba Forest Units) was audited based on FSC principles and criteria. This certification provides a guarantee that this wood comes from forests that are managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially just and economically sustainable manner and that the company is in full compliance with the prevailing legislation.

Portocel: 25th anniversary

Portocel – the specialized seaport at Barra do Riacho, in Aracruz (Espírito Santo State), completed 25 years in operation on March 1st. This terminal, which is privately owned by Fibria (51%) and Cenibra, handles almost 70% of the exports of pulp produced in Brazil and approximately 50% of Fibria’s exports. Last year Portocel shipped a total of 5.6 million tons, 400,000 tons more than in 2008. Portocel handles an average of 22 vessels a month, loading 475,000 tons of pulp, equivalent to about 16,000 tons a day.

Seal of quality

On March 15th, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Fibria launched the seal of certification From Forest to the Table, the first in the sector for foods produced in eucalyptus forests. This initiative is aimed at stimulating the diversification of land use, through a system that combines agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. The foods that are certified come from rural producers who participate in the company’s forest partnership program in that region. The seal, awarded by a certification institute, guarantees the quality and food safety of the products, which are to be sold through supermarket networks throughout the state.

Educational awards

The School Days Competition, for essays about school life, presented prizes to six students in basic and secondary education in the state of Bahia (in Nova Viçosa, Caravelas and Alcobaça) and one in the state of Espírito Santo (in Conceição da Barra). This Votorantim Institute initiative in partnership with Fibria, which is aimed at mobilizing society in favor of higher quality basic public education, received a total of 547 entries from 13 different Brazilian states.

Community training

At the end of February, the Digital Inclusion Project, sponsored by Fibria in Capão Bonito (São Paulo State), presented 2,200 certificates to the 849 students who completed the course in 2009. The project has been running for five years now and has trained more than 1,700 young people in computer proficiency, thus making a contribution to both their personal and professional development.

Visit by Board members

On March 17th and 18th, members of Fibria’s Board of Directors and their guests visited the Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul State) and Aracruz (Espírito Santo State) units. A group of 15 visitors, along with the company’s top administrators, were given a tour of the Três Lagoas forestry and industrial installations. Then, on the second stage of their trip, they visited the local communities of Juerana and Helvécia, in the municipalities of Caravelas and Nova Viçosa (Bahia State), respectively, and were shown around our production complex in Espírito Santo.

Training workshops

60 artisans from seven towns in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, who are working within the Animals of the Mar de Dentro Project, supported by Fibria, participated in specially organized training and creativity workshops, as part of their preparations for the creation of objects for a new collection and participation in an interactive DVD for children and adolescents. The project aims to encourage environmental preservation, since their objects depict fauna that is typical of one of the country’s largest ecological sanctuaries: the Taim Ecological Station, in the far south of Brazil.

Supportive beekeeping

On March 3rd, Fibria’s Aracruz Unit donated 1,000 pots of honey to a children’s charity (Pastoral da Criança) linked to the diocese of São Mateus (Espírito Santo State). The honey was produced under the Apicultura Solidária (Supportive Beekeeping) Program, a company initiative whereby professional beekeepers utilize Fibria’s forest base for honey production. During the last 5 years, Fibria has donated 8 tons of honey to associations and other bodies linked to the Catholic Church in various locations in Espírito Santo State and southern Bahia State, thereby helping around 18,000 children.

Did you know...

...that eucalyptus trees, when suitably managed, provide protection and the conservation of biodiversity? This has been shown by studies of fauna and flora that confirm the effectiveness of Fibria’s production model. The company uses minimum impact silviculture techniques, interspersing the commercial eucalyptus plantations with native forest to form a mosaic that facilitates sustainment and transition of wildlife between native forest fragments.
