Helvécia goes to Salvador
The “Auto de São Benedito”, a play by the theater group of the community of Helvécia (Nova Viçosa, Bahia State), was put on at the Largo do Pelourinho, in Salvador, on October 24th, during the Encounter of Traditional Bahian Cultures. The presentation attracted hundreds of people to this historical center in the state capital of Bahia, both tourists and city dwellers. The play has a cast of 64 Helvécia residents, and was inspired by a book of popular poems that tells the story of this black saint. The piece includes displays by the capoeira (a dance-like martial art) groups Art-Bahia, Bate Barriga and Quebra Aí and a choir of youngsters aged 12 to 17. The production was developed in theater, dance, music, creative and costume workshops held in 2009, in a collaboration between Fibria and the actor, choreographer and director Ciro Barcelos.
Sound forestry
On October 20th, two professionals from the environmental area of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) visited Fibria’s Capão Bonito Forestry Unit (São Paulo State), for the purpose of identifying examples of model environmental practices. They observed the activities of the forest nursery, in silviculture and in harvesting, as well as the forestry management procedures adopted by the company. The bank will compile the information obtained during the visit, in order to prepare a guide to sound practices in the forestry sector.

Social projects developed by the federal government and the municipal government of Jacareí (São Paulo State) got under way on September 28th, utilizing Fibria’s Environmental Education Center (NEA) as their base. Sport, recreational activities, computer skills and dance are among the opportunities offered by the program to young people, registered in projects such as “ProJovem” and “Ação Jovem”, from the São Silvestre community, neighboring the company’s Jacareí Unit. The activities should benefit some 470 local inhabitants between the ages of 14 and 24. In partnership with the local authority’s Youth Assistance Service, the NEA will also offer the community activities aimed at citizenship, culture and the environment.
