Fibria awarded for Atlantic Rainforest conservation project
On November 29th, Fibria took 1st place in the category "Conservation of Natural Resources", during the Ecology Awards 2011, presented by the Espírito Santo state government, for its project to restore approximately 9,000 hectares of the Atlantic Rainforest biome.
Study of the eucalyptus presented at international conference
A study developed by Fibria was one of the topics at IUFRO Eucalyptus 2011, an international conference on the eucalyptus that was held in Porto Seguro (Bahia state) in November. The project "Carbon allocation and leaf gas exchange of Eucalyptus hybrid clones under different climates" tested and selected clones that were most efficient in utilizing natural resources under adverse environmental conditions. The conference was supported by the company and brought together the leading researchers from around the world who are studying the relation between silviculture and genetic improvement, with a view to reducing environmental stress on the eucalyptus.
Fibria promotes study of the tapir
A farm in Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul state) that belongs to Fibria provides the basis for a study of the local tapir (Tapirus terrestris) population. This project is a partnership between Fibria, the Casa da Floresta environmental assessment firm and the UNESP (São Paulo State University) Conservation Biology Lab. and makes use of genetic markers (a DNA profile of each individual, used in genetic studies) to develop a better understanding of the behavior of Latin America's largest mammal.
Odor Perception Network completes its 2011 activities
On December 10th, a meeting of the Odor Perception Network (RPO) was held at Fibria's premises in Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul state) for the purpose of bringing the network's activities in 2011 to a formal close and included a summing up of the RPO's actions during the year. The RPO comprises 76 volunteers from amongst the company’s employees and residents of communities located in the vicinity of the company’s installations.
Fibria receives foreign visitors in Santa Branca
On November 25th, 30 foreign participants in the IUFRO Eucalyptus Conference 2011, held in Porto Seguro (Bahia state), visited Fibria's forests in Santa Branca (São Paulo state) and the harvesting module that produces raw materials for the company's Jacareí Unit (São Paulo state).
Did you know...
...that the Kyoto Protocol has been extended until 2017? The decision was the result of an agreement between the representatives of 200 countries who were gathered for the 17th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-17), in Durban, South Africa. This second phase of the protocol begins in 2013 and a future global agreement for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, with the imposition of obligatory targets for all countries, will come into effect as from 2020.
