Fibria releases its 2010 results

On February 16th, Fibria disclosed its results for the full year 2010. Total pulp production amounted to 5,231 million tons, 1% more than in the previous year. Sales were down 4% from the 2009 volume, but net revenue was up by 18%, to R$ 7.1 billion, as a result of the recovery in prices. The EBITDA (earnings before deducting interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) came to R$ 2.7 billion, 62% more than in 2009. The company’s net debt at the end of 2010 was R$ 9.8 billion, 11% less than at the end of 2009.

Forest Footprint

On January 27th, Forest Footprint Disclosure (FFD) released its second annual report, analyzing to what extent companies’ activities contribute to deforestation. A total of 78 companies participated in the survey. Fibria uses wood from renewable forest plantations and maintains native forest reserves corresponding to almost 40% of its total forested area. It is the only Brazilian pulp & paper company to have responded in full to the FFD survey.

Penido assumes post at BRACELPA

On February 1st, José Luciano Penido, chairman of Fibria, assumed the post of chairman of the Steering Committee of the Brazilian Pulp & Paper Association (BRACELPA), for a term of two years. Penido will also preside over the board of the Union for the Pulp & Paper Industry in the state of São Paulo (SIP-SP).

New forest nursery in Bahia

The first stage of the construction of the Fibria Seedling Production Unit, within the community of Helvécia, in Nova Viçosa, Bahia state, came to a close in January, with completion of the ground preparation. Assembly of the metal structure is already under way. The Unit should be inaugurated towards the end of 2011. It will have the capacity to produce 30 million eucalyptus seedlings a year and is expected to generate 250 jobs. The company’s total investment in the project, which plans to use solar energy, the reutilizing of effluent and a system that uses rainwater for irrigation, is estimated at R$ 30 million.

Forest Savings

EMATER (Company for Technical Assistance and Rural Outreach), of Rio Grande do Sul state, has mapped 51 rural properties that have joined Fibria’s Forest Savings program. This program encourages the planting of eucalyptus, along with traditional crops, as an additional source of income for farmers and a stimulus to preserving the environment. According to the study, of a total of 3,764 hectares, 52% has been devoted to the exclusive planting of eucalyptus, 19% represents Permanent Preservation Areas (APP) and 25% is for other preservation areas, in accordance with the legislation.

In the Atlantic Forest (where the Aracruz, Espírito Santo state, and Jacareí, São Paulo state Units are located) and the Cerrado (where the Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul state Unit is located), Fibria maintains programs for the restoration of native vegetation, surveys of the local fauna and flora, surveillance and Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs).
