| Fibria publishes its 2010 Sustainability Report
Fibria’s 2010 Sustainability Report compiles the results of the company’s performance in the economic, financial, corporate governance and socioenvironmental responsibility spheres during the past year. In addition to Fibria’s business sustainability context, the Report provides a description and analysis of the company’s sustainability goals and targets. This publication is the result of the efforts of more than one hundred professionals, during a five-month period. Fibria’s CEO, Carlos Aguiar, stated that, “This Report is the company’s most important communication tool. It is here that we confirm our commitment to transparency, best corporate governance practices and close and open relations with the communities in which we are inserted. It is also here that we demonstrate

Fibria discloses 1Q2011 results
Fibria showed a net income of R$389 million for the first quarter, 140% higher than in the fourth quarter of 2010. The results were released on May 2nd. This increase was mainly due to the sale of the Consórcio Paulista de Papel e Celulose (CONPACEL) and graphic products distributor KSR. The company’s net debt was reduced by 19% during the quarter, to a total of R$7.96 billion, while the debt / EBITDA ratio was down to 2.9 times, the lowest level since Fibria came into being. Calculation of the Jacareí Unit’s water footprint
In June, researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA) are scheduled to complete a preliminary version of the water footprint – an indicator of water use within the production chain – for Fibria’s Jacareí Unit (São Paulo state). The methodology adopted is that of the Water Footprint Network (WFN), which will also be used at the Três Lagoas (Mato Grosso do Sul state) and Aracruz (Espírito Santo state) Units.
Fibria hosts talk on sustainability reports
On May 3rd, Michael Krzus, of the auditing and financial consulting firm Grant Thornton, visited Fibria’s central administration office, in São Paulo to give a talk on of the concept of “one report”, whereby a company’s financial and non-financial results are disclosed in a single integrated publication. Michael came to Brazil to launch the book One Report: Integrated Reporting For A Sustainable Strategy, which he co-authored with Robert Eccles, a professor at Harvard Business School.
First “Fibria Day” in New York City
On May 11th Fibria organized, in New York City, a meeting between company representatives and investors, analysts and journalists. The event marked the first edition of “Fibria Day”, aimed at developing closer relations between the company’s management and market analysts and press in the USA.
New equipment undergoing testing at the Aracruz Unit
Operational testing of the new bleaching installations in Fiberline A, at the Aracruz Unit (Espírito Santo state), was initiated on May 2nd. The project will allow a reduction in the use of chemicals, while at the same time improving the mill’s energy efficiency. The total investment amounted to R$110 million and generated over 500 jobs while the work was being done.
Participation in birdwatching exhibition
The 6th Brazilian Birdwatchers’ Gathering (AVISTAR), the leading Brazilian event in this field, took place in the city of São Paulo (São Paulo state), between May 13th and 15th. The program included lectures, workshops, and a photographic exhibition. Fibria sponsored the event and a talk on the management and monitoring of birds within the company’s forest areas, as well as painting workshops and children’s games.
Training of nursery staff
More than 20 staff members of the Associação Nativas participated in a training course provided by Fibria at the Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP), in Piracicaba (São Paulo state). The classes covered methodologies and techniques for seed collecting and the production of seedlings of native tree species. The association supplies seedlings used by Fibria in forest restoration.
Local development project focuses on wood and by-products
On May 2nd, the municipal government of Ribas do Rio Pardo (Mato Grosso do Sul state), in partnership with Fibria and other local companies, launched the Project for the Consolidation of Local Production of Wood and Wood Products. This initiative aims to strengthen the local economy through partnerships for the sustainable use of wood in sawmills and furniture factories.
Fibria holds course on seed collection and management
The course on Seed Collection, Management and Legislation regarding Atlantic Rainforest Native Species, held on May 16th and 17th, trained seed collectors, nursery staff and representatives of teaching institutions, environmental bodies and NGOs from the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo. This initiative was developed by Fibria, the Instituto BioAtlântica (IBIO) and the Atlantic Rainforest Restoration Pact and put into practice in the municipality of Teixeira de Freitas (Bahia state).
Aracruz honey is exported to Europe and the USA
Aracruz Beekeepers Association (APIARA) has exported 20 tons of honey in May 2011. This is the second export shipment made by APIARA, which is supported by the Aracruz Municipal Department of Agriculture, Fibria and the Brazilian Support Agency to Micro and Small Companies (SEBRAE).
Fibria participates in international eucalyptus pulp event
Paulo César Pavan, manager of Product Development at the Fibria Technology Center, was a keynote speaker at the 5th International Colloquium on Eucalyptus Pulp, held in Porto Seguro (Bahia state), between May 9th and 12th, where he gave a presentation on the tissue paper segment. Fernando Bertolucci, Technology Center assistant general manager, and Marcelo Rodrigues Silva, process specialist at Fibria, moderated sessions at the event, which was organized by the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) and the Society for Forest Research (SIF).
